Protecting roots from pathogens is an extremely important issue for all growers, whether they grow plants in soil or hydroponically. Given the endless care that growers put into root system development, it's only natural that they want to protect their investment. Pythium, Fusarium, Verticillium and other bacterial and fungal pathogens can cause irreparable damage to hydroponic systems, especially in hot weather when warm air favors mold growth and damage can occur overnight.
There are "solutions" on the market such as UV sterilizers and fungicides available in garden centers, but all these alternatives have disadvantages: price, complexity of use, questionable results, toxicity of fungicides to humans and the environment.
